Michael's reply to Sarah
Hey this is Michael. I agree with Sarah's observation that too much time was
spent on how the small sail boat and rescue mission which ensued. But, I
thought this really hurt the film. It went like this- the members of the
Andrea Gail are introduced to us. In a very short amount of time, we find out
a tid bits about them. What makes them tick and of course, why we should care
about them. Then fast forward, the are out at sea. We see the everyday
hardships of deep sea fishing. Okay, now the storm, not just a storm, but THE
STORM comes and instead of staying with the fishermen, the ones we are now
suppose to be caring about--cut to-- a daft rich man with two women on a
luxurious sail boat. They are in danger. --cut to-- Rescuers, receiving their
call for help. Rescuers who are going to now be an integral part of the film
that we know nothing about. Now if they were solely focused on saving the
members of the Andrea Gail, fine. They can be faceless. However they take up
a lot of screen time, are heroic, we hear their conversations...I did not
know them and I didn't care. It took too much time away from the main story.
One of my friends suggested and I think she's right, that the story is
depressing. A bright spot was needed. Needed? Well of course that is
subjective. This 'bright spot' made the film choppy and by the time the
fishermen came back for the film's climax, I didn't care as much about them
anymore. One last thing. The end scene with the Mark Wahlbergs' wife
appearing, seemed like overcompensation. Like, "alright, we'll use this
technique, now we are going to make you feel something."
Hey and really a great site you have. It must take a lot of work. Thanks I
have really been enjoying it.
Sarah on the perfect storm :)
Hi, I wanted you all to know that I really liked "The Perfect Storm." I really liked this movie. the last one i've seen was gladiator and this one, i thought, was good.
i liked how they showed the rescue team and the other boat, although they kind of spent too much time on it.
the good thing about showing other things was that the entire picture wasn't just focused on andrea gail and her crew.
i liked it that they let your mind wander onto other things that were happening amidst this storm and didn't leave you wandering.
i realize this was based on a true story and usually when movies are based on true stories , they usually go pretty far from the truth. what i mean is, i'm glad it told that they didn't make it (the truth) instead of end it the typical "happy ending" just to please us.
although when they saw that burst of sunlight, i almost thought that they were going to make it, until i remembered that they could be in the eye of the storm.
Reply to Sarah! come on people, I need your opinions + scens, and scripts to grow this site :)
